The glorious red eyed tree frog’s scientific name( agalychnis callidryas) means beautiful tree nymph. It uses those big red eyes to scare away potential predators by suddenly opening them wide and basically screaming in technocolor “DANGER, DANGER’. It’s not poisonous, though, but likes to use color as a statement, like artists.
These cute little froggies go a courting in a big way, using sound (the males call using a “chack” sound) as well as vibrations from shaking leaves, to signal each other. They have a mass coupling, and when a ready partner is found, males hold on the the female for days to make sure he is the only father of the tadpoles. She lays eggs on the underside of leaves, while the guy is still on her back, externally fertilizing them. It is a lot for her, and she has to make sure she gets the right size guy so they don’t fall off the leaves.
I have been a frog/toad fan forever. I love the sounds they make, and their colorful beauty. “From a shamanic perspective Frog is a walker between two worlds – water and earth. As a predominantly night creature Frog has strong ties to the moon. This creature’s songs bring in the rain, and work his special magic. It is a joyous celebration of earth’s nurturing, cleansing and renewal. Frog spirit brings us into a deeper connection with our feelings, perspectives and our ability to purge negativity from our lives be that “dis-ease” spiritual, mental or physical.” -From What’s my spirit animal.
We all could use a little frog magic in our lives.
