Spring is in the air, this is the time of regeneration.  Babies are everywhere,   growing fast. This little painting is of a  pup who would probably be around 3 weeks old, just transitioning from mother’s milk to solids.  His expression is one of curiosity and impish playfulness.  This is a hallmark of the coyote people.  If you should come across a den of pups, keep your distance. mother and father coyote are very protective of their little babes.

Young ones  are up and hunting with their family pack by 3 months, and stay on to learn the ropes until they are about a year old, when they disperse and form their own families.  They can be alone, but when they find a partner, they mate for life.

In many native tribes, coyote stories were central to the stories of creation and death.  For the  Navajo nation, Mąʼii, as coyote was called, was a trickster who  created the Milky Way.  Each Star was an ancestor.  Coyote is also famous  for testing the boundaries of order, and making mischief.  Coyote is cunning and smart.  One has to be if you are an interloper between the world of spirit and the world of matter!

For those of us without the wonderful First Nation stories, we can still admire coyote’s resilience, intelligence and adaptability.  It pushes back against human supremacy.  This canine has learned to live among us. Even with all the wanton and cruel culling, coyote still comes out a winner.
