Owls are magical birds, I have been lucky enough to see several in my life, and only a few up close. I am intrigued by their sense of sight and their sharp hearing, buy I love their plumage most of all. The colors, variety, bars and patterns all are a gorgeous visual feast. Barn owls are pale and their eyes dark, which makes for a startling contrast. Owl looks to be getting its flight feathers in order, zipping up the barbules and getting everything in working order for the night shift. She readies herself for the hunt. The downy soft body contrasts with the stiffness of the flight feathers. Meanwhile the background sings goodnight, with celestial happiness at the return of darkness. I painted this during the perseid meteor shower this summer, when our sunsets were spectacular due to the wildfires. The moon was a waxing crescent, so not too bright to dim the comets. It was all the magic I could want. Thanks Jen Hall for sharing your beautiful barn owl reference photo with me.
