“ I lay there knowing sometimes eerie ties us to the world of animals. Sometimes the animals pull you backward into it. You share hunger and fear with them like salt in blood.” – Barry Lopez, Arctic Dreams
From the beginning, equines have been shaped by an incredible ability to adapt to their changing environment. They have changed their shape, size, and function in an ever-evolving quest simply to live and to survive.
Equines began on our planet in a completely different form around 56 million years ago. Dawn Horses they were called. The tiny creatures whose fossils can be found in Utah were fascinating to me as a child. It sparked my imagination to see the tiny cat sized animal. How could this creature be related to horses we see today I wondered? Its current form began somewhere around 4 million years ago in North America.
I love the strength and power of the horses of Iceland, small and designed to withstand harsh conditions. Animals want nothing more than to survive, no matter what conditions planet earth presents. I feel like we find ourselves at a crossroads, as our environment changes and the ice melts away, we need to not look away, but move boldly toward our fears and confront the truth.
