Magic doesn’t sweep you away, it gathers you up into the body of the present moment so thoroughly that all you explanations fall away: the ordinary, in all its plain and simple outrageousness, begins to shine—to become luminously, impossibly so. Every facet of the world is awake, and you within it.” —David Abram

I have long been in love with the idea of magic, from the simple sleight of hand to animism and the aliveness of all things. When I paint animals, I try to connect to a being that is different than I am. Although we share hunger, pain and pleasure and fear, we humans have separated ourselves from nature. It has allowed us to commit cruelties beyond my comprehension. As a supreme being, we have failed miserably. Supremacy is fast tracked to destroy our one and only home.

I feel magic allows the space for us to rejoin with the others who look and act differently, but are fundamentally the same. We are all earthlings. We share the same DNA, we come from the same elemental building blocks.

When I paint animals I feel this connection with them, even though they aren’t real. It maybe a bit of magical thinking, but I do feel something of the spirit of the creature I imagine. Maybe it’s the idea of the artist making their creation real, like Pygmalion. Maybe its how I keep myself balanced. I miss the animals. I miss the trees and prairies. I miss the world without plastic. I want to breathe some life into something, make it resonate. Of course, I am not completely successful at this, and there are many obstacles to making something sing. My head is full of obsticals to my success, mamely that I don’t know how to paint. Honestly, I paint because I love these creatures, and if you feel it, then you get it.

I've been wanting to paint a white deer for a while now, because they seem to embody a magical presence, making me think of the unicorn tapestries. I imagine the medieval world, how different than ours. Every plant and animal was named and had certain powers. So this deer has a connection to magic and animism in my mind. Of course the moths are luna moths, and they are otherworldly creatures. I’ve only seen one once and I will never forget it. And mushrooms, well we know they are a gift to the earth and all connected with our health and well being.

This is oil on a lead based linen. Yep. I painted on a lead base, it is my favorite thing to paint on so far. I haven’t tried copper or aluminum, but I have a feeling I like the lead base because it seems to really hold the oil paint on the surface. That is a whole topic unto itself.
This painting includes shipping. It will need time to cure and for me to varnish it, so if you want it, let me know and I can hold it for you.
