I loved fruit loops when I was young, but it was mostly because of their mascot, toucan Sam. The real bird fascinated me, and the kellogg’s animated cereal bird lured me in to the sugary world of breakfast cereal. Wake up and pour yourself a bowl of corn flour blend, sugar, wheat flour, whole grain oat flour, oat fiber, soluble oat fiber, a smidge of hydrogenated vegetable oil, salt, Red 40, natural flavor, Blue 2, turmeric color, Yellow 6, annatto color, Blue 1, and a helping of BHT "for freshness”. I would go on to realize that the cereal wasn’t all that fruity, fruit loops were basically cheerios with more additives. I gave up on fruit loops, but my love for the toucan was cemented.
These intelligent and colorful birds are astounding in their variety, with over 50 kinds. Their beaks are made up of kerratin and are hollow. It seems like it would be a handicap to sport a huge schnoz that can be 4 times the size of their head, and it does slow them down in flight. Many varieties wont cross rivers or lakes. They would rather hop around the canopy. The beak has a serrated edge which enables them to catch and open up fish, bats, and insects, should they need a little break from the mostly fruit diet. They live in the tropics of the Americas and favor old growth trees and hollows to raise their chicks, and this is the main reason they are becoming endangered. Another reason is the pet trade, and millions have been sold as cage birds. They are smart and friendly and able to learn tricks.
This painting is of a keel billed toucan, who gazes back at us from a world we can only imagine. I hope there will always be toucans.
