Alan Watts wrote, “A heron stands stock-still at the edge of a pool, gazing into the water. It does not seem to be looking for fish, and yet the moment a fish moves, it dives.”

These tall elegant birds are great teachers of stillness and focus, so that he sees what action to take when the moment is right. This is particularly a good lesson for our busy, rushed lifestyles and screen addictions. I often feel scattered and distracted by social media. When I paint, it helps me to leave behind the chatter. I often focus on eyes for that reason. They help me locate the gateway to another perspective.

Heron is reputed to be gifted with psychic perception and reflection. The guardian of many esoteric secrets, it is said to stand at the gateway between life and death and to act as mediator on the soul’s journey to the other world and reincarnation. You will find this bird at the right time, when needed, and stories and lessons will manifest if you listen.
