“If my decomposing car all helps nourish the roots of a juniper tree of the wings of a vulture, that is immortality enough for me. And as much as anybody deserves.” -Edward Abbey

According to folklore, vultures can be used to communicate with the dead, and today is halloween, what a better ending to this daily series than this regal king vulture? The colors and the intensity of the stare make the bird a readymade artistic delight to paint.

The birds are most known for their work in the sanitation department of earth, eating dead things, keeping the world tidy. Although some of us associate vultures with morbidity, the Egyptians saw the bird as a great protector, often depicting Nekhbet with her wings spread over the people. In Tibetan culture, dead community members are taken to high altitudes so their corpses can be consumed by the birds. The birds take the remains to the heavens, allowing the soul to be reincarnated. I think that is a perfect ending.
