American White Ibis

Daily painting, day 7. I am adding this to my 5x7 offerings, you can purhase my original art for 99.00!
This ibis was painted a few years back, I saw him in the Minnesota zoo and was taken by the beautiful color of his feet and beak. I loved the contrast of the white against the dark background, and the subtle light in the water.
Male White Ibises are super protective. They guard the nest and their female to prevent other ibises from stealing sticks from the nest and from advances of other males during nest building and egg laying. It's not until night when the risks are lower that the female is left alone.
Although this is a fairly common bird in the south, it's numbers have been declining due to habitat pressures and that peculiar tendency of humans to use pesticides on insects and rodents, rarely thinking of the ripple effect.
