white pelican

Daily painting, day 22.  Each one of these minature painting depicts some creature I admire or have come across in my daily life. I love the stark contrast of white against the dark water, the feather patterns and the red eye staring warily.

Here in the pacific NW, the pelicans  return from far off places, flying over mountains and deserts, every spring.  Ive recently  seen them flying in formation across the sky.  It's pretty spectacularto witness.  After the california condor, this bird has the second largest wing span.  Apparently they nest here, in an area in of SE Washington called Useless Bay.   It was only useless to white colonialists, I guess, because the wildlife love it.
