Los Feliz

Denise Monaghan / Comment on this

I used to be adverse to painting smiling children.  I liked the dower somber looking ones best.  I also hated painting teeth. There was something about the frozen moment in time of smiling that seemed wrong to me.  Perhaps i had looked at too many old photographs where people stood motionless for the photographer because the exposure took so long.  Or maybe it was all those dark english paintings, Gainsborough and Riviere and so forth.  Now I think all of it matters, the full spectrum of emotion.  And I've gotten better at teeth!
