The Promise of Rain

I was thinking about how climate change has dried everything up, with fires are burning out of control, air fouled, glaciers melting and birds dropping out of skies. I wake up at night with a weight on my chest thinking of all the beauty being destroyed everyday. Our earth has given us many gifts, rain being one of the most precious. Without water, life would die. Without the promise of the rain, we all suffer.
Zebras have always been a favorite of mine, being so close to horses and donkeys, but more wild, more untamable. Their riotous color has been shown to keep flies off of them, apparently the optics make the insects unable to navigate landing. It was once posited that lions got confused by the patterns when a herd would stamped in fear. Whatever it is, I love the bold graphics of the plains zebras.
The foals of zebra are all dropped around the same time, in the spring, before the rains come. Zebra knows this is optimal. Zebra knows the promise the earth gives to the grass eaters and to the lions and all the others. Life in tune, life in rhythm. Spring is coming, earth is renewing. Listen.
